Every girl needs a fun flirty apron to wear in the kitchen, and that is exactly what I made for a couple of my close friends.
I came up with the pattern completely from scratch so hopefully it isn't too confusing to follow.
I started with a total of 4 yards for all 3 aprons. I made the base pattern by folding an apron I already have in half and tracing around it with about an inch extra all the way around.
When cut out, this is what it looks like.
I double folded or hemmed the edges all the way around at 3/8 inch and sewed to secure.
For the smaller apron all of my ruffle strip were 4 inches wide, and for the adult 6 inches wides. The strips varied in the length because I wanted to have different ruffles throughout the apron. But they were definitely longer then the width of the apron.
I hemmed the 2 short ends and 1 long end of the ruffle strips. Leaving 1 long end raw.
When the ruffle strips were hemmed I took the long stitch on my machine and did a straight stitch 3/8 inch in across the raw edge.
Pulling on one end of the string from the straight stitch will tighten and ruffle the fabric. You may have to work this a little bit to get an even ruffle across the whole strip of fabric.
It is easiest to work with the top ruffle and work your way down. My ruffles started right at the waist. To secure the ruffle strips make sure that the strip is the same width as the apron and is straight across, then pin with right sides together. Sew.
Fold the ruffle over so right side is facing up and stitch over the ruffle again about 1/4 inch from edge. Continue until ruffles are attached.
I used the same method for the next strap and the waist tie. The length will depend on who the apron is for but the width was 4 inches. Sew the long side of the strip, right sides together.
Turn the strip right side out. Tuck the raw ends inside and sew.
For the neck strap sew to top corners of the back of apron. Stitch over same stitch line several times to make sure it is good and secure.
For the waist tie pin to the front of the apron sewing 1/4 inch around the inside of the strap where the body of the apron is.
You are done!
They really are fun little aprons and don't take too long to sew.
I made 2 for adults and 1 for a 3 year old.
